The Spanish government yesterday lamented the death of former Argentine President Carlos Saúl Menem, who during his term of office (1989-1999) contributed to “strengthening the solid ties existing with Spain and the European Union” and was one of “the main drivers” of Mercosur.

“In view of the death of former President Carlos Saúl Menem, the Government of Spain wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to his family and to accompany all the brotherly people of Argentina in their mourning”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“Carlos Menem will remain in the collective memory as the democratically elected president who led Argentina during the 1990s and contributed to strengthening the solid ties that exist with Spain and the European Union”, it continued.

“In addition, he was one of the main driving forces behind the signing of the Treaty of Asunción and Mercosur, which will soon celebrate its thirtieth anniversary”, recalled the Executive of Pedro Sánchez. “The Government of Spain will continue to support, as did President Menem, all efforts aimed at strengthening ties with Argentina, as well as Mercosur and its rapprochement with the European Union”, it concluded.
