The Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, participated yesterday in the opening session of the 47th plenary session of the Committee on Food Security (CFS), which is being held from February 8 to 11.
During her speech, Moreno Bau said that the COVID-19 pandemic “has highlighted the weaknesses of global food systems and the urgent need to promote a transformation towards sustainable, resilient models inspired by the right to food”. She also spoke in favor of promoting investments in family farming and support for rural women for their key role in food security.
The CFS is the international and intergovernmental platform of the United Nations that provides support to countries to ensure food and nutritional security for the world’s population and promotes the sustainable development of countries. Spain is part, for the first time and for the 2020-2021 biennium, of the Executive Bureau, chaired by the Thai Tiensin Thanawat and composed of twelve Member States.
During this session, the 2020 Report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, prepared by FAO, IFAD, WFP, UNICEF and WHO, was also presented, which reflects the growing trend of food insecurity during the last year, due, to a greater extent, to the impact of COVID-19, “placing us on the brink of an unprecedented food crisis”.
