Biden accelerates licences for Iberdrola’s US offshore wind ‘megaproject’

The new US Government, presided by Joe Biden, has decided to resume the process of granting permits for the offshore wind ‘megapark’ Vineyard Wind 1, participated by Iberdrola and which will be the first large-scale project of these characteristics in the country with a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), reports Europa Press.

The situation in which the Vineyard Wind farm, a joint venture between Iberdrola and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), found itself due to obstacles put in place by the previous Administration, headed by Donald Trump, is thus unblocked.

On January 27, Joe Biden issued an order urging the Department of the Interior to identify steps to accelerate renewable energy development on federal lands and waters.

The wind farm was awarded in 2018 and was scheduled to be operational in 2022. However, the environmental permitting roadblock it ran into with the Trump Administration caused it to register delays in its schedule.

Vineyard Wind will be the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the United States. It will generate cost-competitive electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, create 3,600 full-time equivalent (FTE) work hours, and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million tons per year.
