The year 1940, during the German occupation of France by the Nazi army. Lucile Angellier is a young woman awaiting news of her husband, a prisoner of war, while leading a suffocating existence with her controlling mother-in-law in a small French village. The two live oblivious to the reality of war until a group of Parisian refugees arrive in the village fleeing the occupation, followed by a regiment of German soldiers who take up residence in the homes of the villagers. At the Angelliers’ house, Lucile tries at first to ignore Bruno, the elegant and refined German officer who has been assigned to live with them. Book on this link.
