Navantia has started the technical work to lead a European study on the optimization of ship detectability, an initiative that is part of the “SEA Defence” project funded by the European Defence Industrial Development Program 2019 (EDIDP), as reported yesterday by the shipping company.
“SEA Defence” was formally launched last December 14, after being selected by the European Commission in June with the aim of strengthening the European defense technological and industrial base and increasing the EU’s technological autonomy and leadership.
The launch was attended by representatives of the Consortium, the European Commission and the Member States participating in the proposal. Previously the ‘Grant Agreement’ had been signed, a contract between the Consortium and the European Commission for the subsidy of the project, marking an important milestone in naval cooperation in the EU.
In this study, Navantia is leading the “Detectability” package, which will analyze in detail the change of scenario which the new means of ship detection and the technologies with the capacity to avoid them, minimizing the signatures of the naval platforms and optimizing their discretion, will entail.
SEA Defence is being developed in a context of collaboration between the main European naval shipyards, including Damen, Naval Group, Fincantieri, Navantia, SAAB Kockums, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and Lurssen Defence.
Some of the sector’s strategic companies such as TNO, MARIN, Odense Maritime Technology, or the Centro Tecnológico Naval (Murcia) are also participating as main partners.
