The European Parliament insisted yesterday that the EU must The EU must recognize the continuity of Juan Guaidó as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela, according to a resolution approved with 391 votes in favor, 119 against and 177 abstentions.

In favor of the resolution voted the ‘popular’ party, conservatives and liberals while the socialist bloc abstained. The parliamentarians of Unidas Podemos, ERC, and Bildu, as well as Carles Puigdemont and the Junts MEPs voted against.

The European Parliament is the only EU institution that, at the moment, recognizes Guaidó’s status, as there is no unanimity in the bloc, with two member states, Italy and Greece, that avoid recognizing him.

The resolution stresses that it “recognizes neither the legitimacy nor the legality of the National Assembly established on January 5, 2021” on the basis of undemocratic elections held on December 6.

Furthermore, the MEPs call on the Council and the Member States to recognize the constitutional continuity of Venezuela’s legitimate National Assembly elected in 2015 -the last occasion when Venezuelans were able to express themselves freely in an electoral process- and of Venezuela’s legitimate interim president, Juan Guaidó.
