Iberdrola and Total have joined forces to bid for the Thor offshore wind farm in the North Sea, Denmark, which will become one of the largest offshore wind complexes in the world, with a capacity of between 800 and 1,000 megawatts (MW), both companies reported yesterday.
The alliance is preparing a competitive bid for the project, which is expected to be awarded by the Danish Energy Agency by the end of 2021. The wind farm will be connected to the grid between 2025 and 2027.
By entering Denmark, Iberdrola will strengthen its position in the northern European offshore wind market, where it already operates three wind farms with a total capacity of almost 1,500 MW: West of Duddon Sands, commissioned in 2014 with a capacity of 389 MW in the Irish Sea; Wikinger, in German waters of the Baltic Sea, in operation since 2017 with 350 MW; and East Anglia One, in UK waters, with a capacity of 714 MW.
