Iberdrola increases presence in Greece building another wind farm

Iberdrola is accelerating its commitment to renewable energies in Greece with the start of construction of the 33.6 megawatt (MW) Mikronoros wind farm in the province of Rhodopi (Thrace), according to the company, which expects to reach an installed ‘green’ capacity of 435 MW in that country by 2022.

Specifically, the park will consist of eight wind turbines ‘V150’ of 4.2 MW unit power, with a hub height of 105 meters and a rotor diameter of 150 meters.

When it comes into operation in the middle of this year, Iberdrola’s installed renewable energy capacity in Greece and Cyprus will be 335 MW.

In 2022, the energy company chaired by Ignacio Sánchez Galán expects three more wind power projects to come on stream, adding a further 100.4 MW to the company’s installed capacity in the region, bringing it up to 435.4 MW.

The Askio II (33.6 MW), Askio III (50 MW) and Rokani (16.8 MW) wind farms, which Iberdrola won in the capacity auction held in the middle of last year in this market, will contribute to this objective.

At June 2020, Greece had 7,237 MW of installed renewable capacity, of which 3,832 MW is wind power and 2,841 MW is photovoltaic.

Last November, Iberdrola launched a new strategic plan that envisages investments of 75,000 million euros over the period 2020-2025, with the aim of doubling its renewable capacity and taking advantage of the opportunities of the energy revolution facing the world’s leading economies.

The group has an installed capacity of more than 33 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, making its generation park one of the cleanest in the energy sector.
