The Spanish government yesterday issued a statement in which it welcomed the results of the Gulf Cooperation Council summit held on Tuesday in Al Ula (Saudi Arabia) as a step towards normalising relations between Qatar and various countries in the region, following the crisis that began in 2017.
At the Al Ula meeting, a declaration was approved which was signed by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, after Riyadh decided the previous day to open its borders with Qatar, against which accusations of support for terrorism had been made three and a half years ago.
In the communiqué distributed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated that “the Spanish Government is confident that the re-establishment of cooperation will contribute to regional stability and benefit its citizens by making it possible to better tackle common problems, such as the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic”.
Spain also “acknowledges the valuable mediation of Kuwait, which, together with the United States, has worked tirelessly since the beginning of the crisis in June 2017”.
