The government and the opposition in Spain yesterday condemned the irruption of thousands of Donald Trump’s followers in the Capitol to prevent the ratification of the results of the elections of November 3.
“I am following with concern the news coming from the Capitol in Washington”, stated the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, through his Twiter account. “I am confident in the strength of America’s democracy”, he continued. “Joe Biden’s new presidency will overcome the stage of tension, uniting the American people”, he concluded.
“Democracy is based on the peaceful transfer of power: he who loses has to accept defeat”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya. “Full confidence in senators and representatives to carry out the will of the people. Full confidence in President-elect Joe Biden”, she added via Twitter.
“Trump calls for a coup d’état and his followers storm the Capitol. An attack on full-blown democracy,” Podemos said. “This is the result of the anti-democratic and inflammatory speeches of the ultra-right. They lose respect for institutions when they do not serve their interests”, it added.
For his part, the president of the PP, Pablo Casado, declared that “the assault on the Capitol is unacceptable”. “Democracy is based on parliamentary representation that cannot be coerced,” he warned. “It is regrettable that a great nation like the United States is suffering this institutional crisis that the outgoing president must tackle, and I trust that the president-elect will overcome it”, he added.
Ciudadanos expressed their “rejection of the totalitarian attempt to take over the Capitol to sabotage democracy in the United States”. “Democrats respect institutions and sovereignty. Nationalism and populism seek to undermine them”, it continued. “With liberal democracy, always”, it concluded. For her part, the party leader, Inés Arrimadas, said that “the news and images coming from the US Capitol are very worrying. A group of radicals is attempting to alter the constitutional and democratic order by force. How much damage is done and how dangerous populism is”.
