From 12 January to 7 February 2021, the Teatro Español in Madrid will be presenting the world premiere of El caballero incierto in the Sala Margarita Xirgu, a play in which Laila Ripoll, based on an original idea by Silvia de Pé, adapts the vicissitudes of Josefina Aznárez’s fictional character, created by the writer Rosa Montero in her celebrated novel La carne, to the stage.
El caballero incererto is the imaginary story of Josefina Aznárez, a major character, passionate, magical, one of those who appear very occasionally and remain forever in the memory of the reader/spectator. Josefina is presented to us as a writer who unfolds into a male character in order to achieve the respect and admiration that she is denied because of her condition as a woman. A cursed, torn and painful character who could well be Hildegard of Bingen, Maria Lejarraga or George Sand. A character whose destiny intersects on 3 November 1893 with the explosion and subsequent tragedy of the steamship Cabo Machichaco in Santander, which caused more than 500 deaths and as many injured.
