The number of immigrants who arrived irregularly in Spain by sea and land during 2020 was 41,861, representing an increase of 29% compared to 2019, according to the provisional balance made public yesterday by the Ministry of Interior.
The migratory pressure was mainly concentrated in the Canary Islands, where 23,023 people arrived, 756.8% more than in 2019, while there was a significant decrease in irregular arrivals on the coasts of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, as well as in Ceuta and Melilla, where illegal entries by land fell significantly.
According to the latest data from the Interior Ministry, arrivals in the Canary Islands are continuing the downward trend of recent weeks; between 16 and 31 December 1,571 illegal immigrants arrived in the archipelago compared to 1,886 in the previous fortnight or the 8,157 recorded in November.
