‘Peace Processes in Central America and Colombia’, by Y. Pico de Coaña

December 22, 2020
in Books, Leisure

Author: Yago Pico de Coaña.

On 17 December, the book Los procesos de paz en Centroamérica y Colombia (The Peace Processes in Central America and Colombia) by Ambassador Yago Pico de Coaña was presented at Casa América. Si vis pacem, para bellum. This ancestral maxim, which many of us find simply absurd, still sums up the defence strategy of the vast majority of countries. Every year, arms budgets increase, while the injustices that cause inequality, marginalisation and death multiply. Extreme situations that form the breeding ground for confrontations, insurrections and wars.

This book offers an alternative to these horrors, narrated from the author’s experience. Yago Pico de Coaña, ambassador, personally experienced many conflicts in Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua) and Colombia. Based on his experiences, today he offers us a different paradigm to that proposed by the old Roman aphorism. Peace can only be achieved through justice. The book, apart from its pleasant narrative, contains a good dose of pedagogy: it lists the basic principles of a peace process and describes how these processes are carried out.
