Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Colman and Olivia Williams head the cast of The Father, directed by Florian Zeller, a tough film but one that is also very revealing in terms of understanding the unraveled mind of a person in his or her old age.
This dramatic film revolves around Anthony, an old man who, after being widowed, has decided to live alone, rejecting all the carers that his daughter Anne tries to hire to help him in his daily life. She, because of her personal life, cannot visit him every day as she used to and feels that the situation is beyond her control. As if this were not enough, Anne realises that her father’s mind is beginning to fail more and more, progressively disconnecting from the reality around him and having frequent regressions and even violent outbursts. This causes a strong dilemma for Anne, who wonders if she has the right to live her own life knowing that she is gradually losing her father.
