‘My Cat Yugoslavia’, by Finnish writer Pajtim Statovci

December 28, 2020
in Books, Leisure

Author: Pajtim Statovci.

Yugoslavia in the early 1990s: While Emine’s arranged marriage is falling apart, the country is bleeding to death in a bloody war. Decades later, her son Bekim is doubly marginalized in Finland, both as an immigrant and as a homosexual. His only companion is a boa constrictor who he lets wander freely around his flat, despite his snake phobia. One night, in a gay bar, Bekim meets a talking cat. This witty, fickle and manipulative creature will take Bekim back to Kosovo to face his demons and understand his family history -and even find love-. Pajtim Statovci, a doctoral candidate in comparative literature at the University of Helsinki, is a young Finnish novelist of Kosovar origin who has been awarded the most prestigious literary prizes in his country.
