Jean Genet’s ‘Las Criadas’ at the Naves del Español in Matadero

October 8, 2020
in Leisure

Pentación Espectáculos and the Teatro Español are presenting until 8 November in the Naves del Español in Matadero in Madrid the play Las Criadas (The Maids), by Jean Genet, performed by the actors Jorge Calvo, Ana Torrent and Alicia Borrachero.

“These maids are monsters, like ourselves when we dream,” said the author. The sisters Claire and Solange are the maids of a lady of the French high bourgeoisie. Every night they begin a perverse ceremony, a ritual where reality and fiction mix in a dangerous game of identity change. Claire is the Madame and Solange is Claire. Solange is the Madame and Claire is Solange, the sisters alternate roles constantly, none of them exists by itself because they are two faces of the same character. The Lady represents for them the top of the pyramid, the light where the desire to be another is reflected. This is why the sisters dress, play and become a simulation of that divine being that is the Lady. The restlessness and anger of being aware of their fate as servants will inevitably lead them to a fatal outcome. Timetables and entries on this link.
