The Diplomat
The Spanish Government yesterday expressed its condolences to the people of Tanzania on the death of the former president of the country from 1995 to 2005, Benjamin William Mkapa.
A note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes Mkapa as “a statesman and a key figure in the consolidation of democracy in Tanzania, as well as an eminent champion of mediation in the regional context”.
Benjamin Mkapa passed away on 24 July, and is considered one of the great actors of peace in East Africa for a decade, as he led several regional mediation efforts in conflicts in East Africa during his mandate.
