The president of the Superior Council of Sports (Consejo Superior de Deportes, CSD), Irene Lozano, has chosen the diplomat Joaquín María de Arístegui Laborde as director general of Sports, the same position he held during Lozano’s previous term as Secretary of State for Global Spain.
Arístegui, whose appointment was officially announced last Tuesday by the Council of Ministers, belongs to a family of diplomats and joined the diplomatic career in 1992. Since then he has been posted in Romania, the Netherlands, El Salvador, Thailand, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, France and China. Among other positions he has served as ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and consul in Beijing and Lyon.
In Madrid he has held the positions of Deputy Director General for Continental Asia and Deputy Director General for Bilateral Economic Relations with Developing Countries and Project Director at the Office of the High Commissioner of the Government for the Marca España (2014).
In November 2018 he was appointed Director General of the Office of Global Spain by Irene Lozano, who had just taken over the newly created Secretariat of State. He remained in the post until last February, when he was dismissed by Lozano’s successor, Manuel Muñiz.
