Salamanca, land of Lazarillo, philosophers, bulls and the Tormes River

April 3, 2020
in Culture & Art, Leisure

With a pleasant, fresh and young atmosphere, Salamanca is always open, ready to welcome and deliver the richness of its heritage, culture and gastronomy. The city is a World Heritage Site, and has a multitude of historical corners and buildings; all of them are concentrated in the historic centre, so the visit must be made on foot. Sunrise and sunset are magical moments. The light transforms the interior and the exterior; a single glow bathes the golden facades and the characters that have passed through the city throughout its history are present.

Salamanca is home to the oldest active university in Spain, the University of Salamanca, founded in 1218 by Alfonso IX of Leon on the seed of his general study, and was the first in Europe to hold the title of university by royal decree of Alfonso X the Wise on November 9, 1252. Salamanca is linked to world history by names such as Antonio de Nebrija, Christopher Columbus, Fernando de Rojas, Francisco de Vitoria and the School of Salamanca, Fray Luis de Leon and Miguel de Unamuno.
