Leopoldo Alas García-Ureña, known by his pseudonym “Clarín” (1852-1901), is a famous writer from Zamora born in 1852, considered one of the most important novelists of the 19th century.
La Regenta is a critique of the falsehood present in society, on which the author unloads his irony: virtue is praised and, on the other hand, the sin of others is desired, the characters make an effort to pretend to be what they are not, etc. In this way, this work is both a satire and a drama: on the one hand, there is the comedy of Vetusta, which is seen from the surface, and on the other, there is the tragedy of the main character Ana Ozores, which is analysed in depth.
