Author: Francisco Cánovas Sánchez.
This year 2020 marks the centenary of the death of the writer Benito Pérez Galdós, (1843-1920), one of the great figures of contemporary Spain. Francisco Cánovas Sánchez presents the book Benito Pérez Galdós: vida, obra y compromiso (Benito Pérez Galdós: life, work and commitment), in which he highlights the extraordinary literary production of Galdós, in which, unlike other writers, he was not an impassive spectator of social reality; on the contrary, he was committed to the construction of a freer and more supportive Spain. For this reason, knowledge of Galdós’ life, his time and his political activity is indispensable in order to understand his work and his personality. Despite this, most researchers have prioritised the study of his literary texts, leaving the political, reflective and public aspects of his life in the background. The present biography fills this traditional gap through the study of three complementary facets of Galdós’ biographical career: the insertion of his activity in the historical and cultural coordinates of the period he lived in; the social relevance of his writings, both literary and journalistic; and the civic and democratic commitment he showed in all the facets of his public projection.
