The CEOE has called on the Governments of Spain and France to guarantee the free movement of goods and people in both territories, following the roadblocks carried out by Tsunami Democràtic and the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR), and recalled that 10,000 heavy vehicles pass through the La Junquera border crossing every day and that the blockades can cause losses of some 25 million euros per day.
In a statement, the Transport and Logistics Council of CEOE has warned that “it is the responsibility” of the Spanish and French governments to prevent and stop these blockades, “especially when these cuts were known previously”.
“The forced inactivity of the transport of goods by road, strategic sector and backbone of the national economy, will have a serious impact on the flow of Spanish exports and imports, and therefore a serious damage to manufacturers and distributors, as two thirds of them circulate through the border of Girona, which uses an average of more than 10,000 heavy vehicles a day“, it continued.
In addition, this situation “will damage the economic activity of Catalonia itself and the rest of Spain only by direct losses of turnover of transport companies, by losses of a certain part of the loads, especially perishable ones; by alterations in logistics flows and by their consequences on production and distribution, which can all exceed 25 million euros per day“.
The representatives of the sector in the CEOE also warn of the “weariness of their employers and professional drivers by this type of blockades and riots, and suffered recently before the general elections and also caused by groups such as the CDR, after learning the ruling on the procès of the Supreme Court”, concludes the statement.
