The flag of Azerbaijan is one of the state symbols (together with the anthem and coat of arms) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and was first approved on 9 November 1918 by the Council of Ministers of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan (DRA) – the first democratic republic in the Muslim East.
On 18 October 1991, under the Constitutional Act on the “Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, state symbols, including the flag, were recovered by the Republic of Azerbaijan as the successor to the DRA.
The tricolour flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan is composed of three horizontal stripes of equal size, the top blue, the middle red and the bottom green. Above the red stripe there is a crescent moon and an eight-pointed star in white. The light blue colour of the flag represents Turkish origin, the red symbolises the ideology of modern freedom and the green colour alludes to Islam.
According to the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed on November 18, 2009, the State Flag Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan on November 9.
