The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday issued a statement recommending to avoid travel to Sri Lanka, after the attacks in that country against three churches and four hotels in which at least 218 people have been killed and 450 injured.
The communiqué reports that the Sri Lankan authorities have declared a curfew, communications are affected and air transport is undergoing alterations.
Also, it is recommended to exercise caution to those who are already present in the area, staying in hotels or houses where they are, avoiding public areas and following the instructions of local authorities. In addition, it asks them to be attentive to the recommendations of the Spanish Embassy through social networks (@EmbEspIndia) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (@MAECgob).
Spanish diplomatic staff of the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi went to Colombo to carry out the necessary inquiries regarding possible victims and attention to Spaniards. The honorary consul in Colombo contacted the local authorities.
Until yesterday night there was no record of any victim of Spanish nationality among the 35 foreigners killed.
Hours before, the Spanish Government had expressed its condemnation of the attacks and its condolences to the people and Government of Sri Lanka and had reaffirmed its commitment in the international fight against all forms of terrorism.
