The Diplomat
The Nicaraguan Embassy in Spain commemorated on Thursday the 85th anniversary of the death of the revolutionary Augusto César Sandino, “general of free men and women”, as Ambassador Carlos Midence emphasized in his speech.
The event, which took place at the Foundation for the Europe of Citizens, in Madrid, was attended by Fran Pérez, member of the Solidarity Platform with Nicaragua and the FSLN and international head of Izquierda Unida, who praised the figure of the leader of the Nicaraguan resistance against the United States, assassinated on February 21, 1934 by the troops commanded by General Anastasio Somoza.
Next, the coordinator of the Culture area of The Diplomat, Juan David Latorre, made a semblance of the deed, thought and legacy of the general. For his part, the Nicaraguan painter and poet José Aragón spoke about “ouramericanism” in Sandino and analyzed some of his best known manifestos.
The Spanish theologian Benjamín Forcano read a poetry dedicated to Sandino and there was cantata-tribute from the artists José María Alfaya and Juanjo Anaya. To finish, the guests tasted the typical Nicaraguan dish Vigorón.
