The Embassy of Finland confirmed the dismissal of its honorary consul general in Barcelona, Albert Ginjaume, as of today and “at the request of the Spanish Government”. The dismissal has been carried out by common agreement with the Catalan businessman and it is the fourth of these characteristics in Catalonia in the last years, as The Diplomat informed on Monday.
“According to the Spanish Government, Mr Ginjaume has carried out inappropriate activities for an honorary consul. These activities are related to the political situation that Catalonia is living at the moment”, the Finnish Embassy pointed out in a statement. The work of honorary consuls is regulated by the Vienna Convention. Honorary consuls work under the authorisation (exequatur) granted by the recipient country.
“Without the approval of the recipient country, the honorary consul is in no conditions to remain in the position. It is essential for the honorary consul to have the trust of the recipient country. Mr Ginjaume has served Finland in an exemplary way for the 19 years he has worked as Finland’s honorary vice-consul and then honorary consul general to Barcelona”, the Embassy of the Nordic country concluded.
