Spanish Congress yesterday rejected the Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, for having questioned the teaching of spanish in Catalonia. The vote was supported by the PSOE, Unidos Podemos, Compromís, Bildu and the Catalan pro-independence supporters of the ERC and the PDeCAT.
It is the second time in 15 days that the head of the Diplomacy is censored by the House of Deputies. The reproach of Dastis was raised by ERC, who criticized the minister for statements on the BBC television in which he denied that in Catalonia it is taught in Spanish.
“The Congress expresses its support for the model of linguistic immersion, which has given so many good results”, and “reproves the Foreign Minister for publicly and deliberately lying about not teaching Spanish in the Catalan public school”, points out the two points of the motion that went ahead in the Plenary Session of the Congress.
The PP and Ciudadanos voted against but could not prevent the failure to go ahead, while the five deputies of the PNV opted for abstention. The Congress, however, did reject the third point of the motion, in which President Mariano Rajoy was urged to dismiss Dastis, because here the Socialists chose to abstain, winning the game the union of PP and Ciudadanos.
