The Union of Ukrainian Associations in Spain is waitng a response from Madrid City Council to erect a monument in recognition of Iván Frankó (1856-1916), a writer and thinker who played an essential role in the introduction of Spanish literature in Ukraine, reported to The Diplomat the president of this association, Andriy Yakubuv.
The idea, according to its promoters, “is not a simple whim: it is an initiative that would contribute much to cultural relations and serve as a reference for dialogue”. In 2016 the Ukrainian collective of the University of Valencia promoted the placement of a bronze plaque to Miguel de Cervantes in the hometown of Iván Frankó, in the Lviv region, which was inaugurated by the Ukrainian Minister of Culture.
The president of the Community of Madrid, Cristina Cifuentes, has already expressed in a letter to the promoters his “support for the public recognition of such outstanding Ukrainian intellectual for the bridges he built between the Slav culture and Western Europe”.
