Portugal’s presence during Madrid’s Book Fair becomes more poetic on its national day. On 10 June 1580, Camões, recognized for his work Os Lusíadas, Portugal’s epic poem celebrating the nation’s success and its rich history, and representing Portugal’s success in the discovery of the New World during the 16th century, died. His influence is such that the Portuguese is known as “Camões’s language”.
For the Portuguese it is a day to extol their roots, meet friends and relatives, and go outside to celebrate. Faithful to this tradition, Portugal gives the opportunity of knowing more about its culture during the Fair, especially through its poetry, from 9 to 12 June.
