Author: Carmelo Mesa-Lago.
This afternoon, at 19:00 hrs, Carmelo Mesa-Lago will present his new book Voces de cambio en el sector no estatal cubano (Voices of change in the non-state Cuban sector) at Casa de América. More than one million people, almost a third of the Cuban workforce, are in the “non-state sector” of the economy: autonomous workers, beneficial owners of land, members of new cooperatives, buyers and sellers of private housing, among other groups. Although they are the main figures of Raúl Castro’s most important structural reform, which entails a gradual reduction of the state sector, the characteristics (age, gender, race and education), socioeconomic conditions, and aspirations of the emerging non-state sector are unknown.
