The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, delivered yesterday the Nueva Economía Fórum Award 2017 for Economic Development and Social Cohesion to the president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, who thus put the finishing touch to his dense official visit to Spain.
The Teatro Real of Madrid was the scene of the award ceremony, which has been awarded “to the Argentine nation, in the person of its president”, in recognition “for its political leadership, its intelligent strategy and its efforts to return to Argentina to the path of economic progress and social cohesion, as well as to recover and strengthen economic and political relations between our countries”.
The event, presented by the President of the Congress of Deputies, Ana Pastor, was attended by the President of the Senate, Pío García-Escudero; the Ministers of Interior, Justice and Agriculture, and the Secretary of State for Cooperation and Ibero-America, Fernando García Casas, among other authorities.
“There are so many demonstrations of affection and affection received that my heart is full”, Macri said in reference to the official visit, which began Tuesday and concludes today.
According to the president, after overcoming the 2001 crisis and a “very conflictive” political process, Argentine society has “matured and learned from its mistakes, and lives a change based on greater tranquility and harmony and the recovery of the value of dialogue”, which will help overcome “conflicts like the one that, unfortunately, we live with our brother country Spain”.

Therefore, he continued, “our dream is that this journey be the beginning of a closer relationship”, because, in a world dominated by “contradictory messages” and by “many fears that rule in societies”, the “easier, better and faster is to work together the Spanish and Argentine people”. “There is no doubt that the presence of Spanish companies in Argentina is a very good starting point”, he added.
For his part, Mariano Rajoy stressed the ability of the Argentine president to, after receiving a “legacy that was not easy, frankly convince its citizens of the inescapable of reforms and the reinsertion of Argentina in the world economy”.
“Without effort, freedom of enterprise and equity, it is impossible to achieve sustainable growth, and there is no other formula, no matter how many, on both sides of the Atlantic, insist on the opposite“, added Rajoy, who warned against “protectionist winds” that blow today.
