Casa Árabe is presenting this afternoon at 19 hrs. the book Madrid islámico, by the Arabist Daniel Gil-Benumeya, a work devoted to the Islamic origins and legacy of the city. The author will be accompanied by Ana Varela Mateos, General Coordinator of Culture, Sport and Tourism at the Madrid City Council. The event will be introduced by Pedro Villena, Director-General of Casa Árabe.

Madrid is the only European capital with an Islamic origin, even if this statement has been the objective of a lengthy controversy that continues to this day and which expresses the extent to which the heritage of  al-Ándalus continues to be fully accepted by the Spanish collective imagination. For 250 years, Madrid formed part of the defensive system of the northern frontier of  al-Ándalus, until its conquest and incorporation in the Kingdom of Castille at the end of the XI century. However, the Moors continued to be present in Madrid for a further five hundred years, as the Mudéjar, and later, the Morisco minorities.
