Spain expressed its concern for the situation in Haiti, which has found itself obliged to postpone sine die the second round of elections which should have been held on 24 January. In a communique issued yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs called upon the “people, the Government and all the political players” in the country to keep calm so that the “will of the people may be expressed in free and fair elections”.

The Spanish Government also urged agreement “on the basis for talks and for consensus” a new date for the pending elections, a process that must continue and conclude, in the words of Foreign Affairs, “in a pacific and civilised manner”.
