The Spanish Government reiterated its willingness, yesterday, to back the Colombian people in their search for peace, one day after the United Nations Security Council approved the creation of a political mission of international observers to monitor the ceasefire agreed between Juan Manuel Santos’s Government and the FARC guerillas.

“Spain congratulates the Government and people of Colombia for their tenacity in the search for peace and reiterates its willingness to continue to accompany them in the consolidation of this objective both from the United Nations Security Council and bilaterally in its position as a member of the European Union”, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in a communique.

The fifteen members of the Security Council, one of which is Spain, unanimously approved the request by the Government and the FARC on Monday for the creation of a mission to oversee the ceasefire and the surrender of arms.
