Algeria’s Government, led by Abdelaziz Buteflika has requested the agrément from the Spanish Government for a new ambassador, according to information given to The Diplomat by Spanish diplomatic sources.

The new ambassador is to be Taous Feroukhi, currently Diplomatic Advisor to the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtame Lamamra, and who, until a few months ago, was the Director-General of Political Affairs and International Security in the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Feroukhi has had a lengthy diplomatic career, both in her own country and abroad, above all in dealing with disarmament matters. In May last year, she presided the Ninth Conference on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Arms in New York and, in 2005 and 2010 she also represented her country at this international event.

She has also worked in the UN office in Vienna where she presided the Governing Board of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Organisation. One of her earlier diplomatic postings was, in fact, Madrid.

Feroukhi will be taking over as head of the Algerian Embassy in Spain from Mohammed Haneche, who has spent more than ten years in the Spanish capital and has become the dean of the Arab ambassadors resident in Madrid.
