The Spanish politician, Pedro Agramunt (PP) was yesterday elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the organisation with its headquarters in Strasbourg  whose dependency is the European Court of Human Rights.

Agramunt is thus the fourth Spaniard to occupy this position. He is replacing the Luxembourgian Anne Brasseur and his mandate will last for one year, extendible for only 12 months more.  In his investiture speech, Agramunt said he was convinced that in Europe, the citizens “must resolve their problems together”.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe comprises 324 deputies and senators from the 47 Member States. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed his “satisfaction” at this appointment and said in a communique that Spain is “fully committed to the values and principles of the Council of Europe, in the defence of human rights, democracy and the state of law, as well as the fight against discrimination, xenophobia, organised crime and terrorism”.
