On 17 February, Gibraltar will host a symposium at the John Mackintosh Hall about the role of the Rock in the Spanish Civil War. Entry will be free. The congress will have the participation of historians Gareth Stockey and Chris Grocott, and professor Pepe Algarbani, all of them experts on the role played by Gibraltar during this period, as InfoGibraltar informs.
A recorded interview with professor Paul Preston, one of the most important experts on the Civil War, will also be screened during the congress. Michael Netto, director of area for Unite the Union, organizer of the symposium, affirms that it is “important” to emphasize “the role played by ordinary people in Gibraltar in the fight against the fascist Spain”, as well as “the role played by the trade union in Gibraltar during the Spanish Civil War and the contribution made by those Gibraltarians who fought and died in Spain defending democracy”.
