Security Council appointed Spain as the Facilitator to brief on the compliance of Iran’s commitments.

The United Nations Security Council has appointed Spain to be responsible for the coordination of the work to verify Iran’s implementation of the commitments acquired on nuclear issues, in compliance with Resolution 2231 issued by this Organisation of which Spain is a permanent member.

In a note issued yesterday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spanish Government expressed its satisfaction on the publication of the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in which it noted Iran’s compliance with the commitments agreed with the international community on the transparency and exclusively civilian nature of its nuclear programme, commitments that were ratified by the above mentioned Resolution 2231. And it added that this first step will redound in the lifting of an important number of the sanctions imposed on Iran.

The Spanish Government is confident that “Iran’s full compliance with its obligations on this matter will facilitate its full integration in the international community and enable an improvement in the situation of a region subject to profound crises and complex conflicts. “Only full compliance will guarantee the civil and pacific nature of the nuclear programme,” the note adds.

In addition, it pointed out that it ends the work of the 1737 Committee, responsible for the surveillance of the sanctions on Iran, headed by Spain to date.

The Security Council has now appointed Spain as the Facilitator to brief the other members of the Council on the compliance and verification of Iran’s commitments in respect of its nuclear programme.

“This new responsibility means that Spain will coordinate the work of the Security Council on the matter,” said the note, which goes on to say that “the Spanish Government acknowledges the confidence shown in Spain by the members of the Security Council in recognition of our reliability and the work of our country, heading the Committee, on the sanctions imposed on Iran and assumes this new responsibility with determination”.
