The Spanish Government has praised the Action Plant to prevent violent extremism which was presented on Friday in New York by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and highlighted the treatment given to victims of terrorism.
A note issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “support with all determination” of the measures included in the Plan, which it said “would contribute to rationalising and systematising the work of the different United Nations bodies involved in combating terrorism, and presents a number of recommendations for drawing up national Action Plans that are in accordance with the lines already followed by our country in preventing and combating violent extremism”.
The Spanish authorities added that “our country will make an active contribution to the development of the Plan and to the counter-terrorism fight, including the efforts to fill the lacunae in the international juridical architecture”.

It considers treatment of victims of terrorism as very positive

The communiques describes the treatment of victims, as “very positive”, both in all that relating to the necessity of giving them assistance, and in “the important role that their testimony can play in reinforcing the counter-terrorism narrative”. In addition, it also praises the reference to the Victims of Terrorism Support Portal at the CTITF (Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force), which “could produce important work in this respect”.
Finally it is congratulated on including the reference to Women, Peace and Security, “given their relevant role in the sphere of the fight against radicalisation and violent extremism” as included in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2242, inspired by Spain.
The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, recommended on Friday that all governments should put under way national and regional plans to prevent violent extremism within an overall strategy to halt the advance of such terrorist groups as the Islamic State and Boko Haram.
