Spain presented its cooperation agreement with Morocco in the fight against terrorism as a successful model, in the course of an international meeting on foreign terrorist combatants held on Monday in the Hague, which was attended by the Global Counterterrorism Forum and the International Coalition against Daesh

At the meeting, Spain, represented by Ignacio Ybáñez, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs gave it’s support to the final document presented by the Joint Presidents of Holland, Morocco and Turkey. Previously, Ibáñez had pointed out that in July last year there was a high level meeting in Madrid of the United Nations  Counter-Terrorism Committee, followed by a meeting of the Foreign and Interior Ministers, that concluded with a Ministerial Statement focused on the measures to foresee and combat the flows of foreign terrorist combatants.

In addition, he underlined the need to work on the prevention and the fight against radicalisation and violent extremism and, like the others at the meeting, presented the measures adopted by Spain, among them the National Strategy against Violent Radicalisation, approved by the Government during the last legislature, which includes measures designed to guarantee the protection of victims and improve its role in the efforts to counteract the discourse of violence.

Once the ministerial meeting ended, there was a technical session during which experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Ministry of the Interior in the Spanish delegation presented details of the cooperation between Madrid and Rabat over several years which has been successful. particularly with reference to the detection of foreign terrorist combatants and the dismantling of networks involved in attracting jihadists.

According to a note issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this Spanish-Moroccan bilateral cooperation was presented as “a model for the exchange of information and international police and legal cooperation in the face of the terrorist threat”.
