Spain subscribes “fully” to the declaration made by Federica Mogherini.

The Spanish Government yesterday issued a call to Saudi Arabia and Iran to overcome “by way of dialogue” the crisis opened up between the two countries after the authorities in Riyadh announced on 2 January the execution of the Shia cleric Nimr al Nimr, an outspoken critic of the regime.

In the communique issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government also expressed its “rejection and condemnation” of “all violation of the principle of inviolability”of diplomatic missions, in reference to the assault on the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Tehran.

This same communique also pointed out that Spain subscribes “fully” to the declaration made on the same day by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini who, following a conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohamed Yav Zarif, warned of the danger that the execution of 47 people by Saudi Arabia could lead to greater instability in the region. Mogherini said literally that “the international community and the main players in the region are working strongly to support the political solution to the crisis in Syria and to join forces against terrorist groups, and these forces must not be torpedoed by new instability”.

The Spanish Government, in addition, reiterated in the communique its “firm and unequivocal opposition in principle to the death penalty in any place and circumstance”.
