Bangladesh wants to double in six years its capacity to generate electricity and triple it in fifteen. Besides, it wants Spanish companies to lead the promotion of its energy system.
This is what the Bangladeshi deputy minister of Energy, Nasrul Hamid, told Efe on the occasion of the inauguration in Dacca of the I Association Meeting between Spain and Bangladesh.
The forum, promoted by the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX in its Spanish acronym), has gathered representatives of 20 top Spanish companies, of a hundred public entities and local private companies.
Companies such as Isolux Corsán, TSK and Técnicas Reunidas are already developing several electric plants of simple and combined cycles financed by the Government or by international institutions.
At the moment, 25% of the 160 million Bangladeshi do not have access to electricity and the capacity of generation is of about 13,000 megawatts, a volume that, according to official data of the Government, aspires to double in 2021, to reach 39,000 megawatts by 2030.
Spain approved Hassan Mahmud Khandaker as Bangladesh’s Ambassador
Bangladesh has a territory that is the third part of that of Spain and has four times more population. Besides, it considers the development of infrastructures and the increase of foreign investment to be essential.
Bilateral trade between Spain and Bangladesh has tripled in the last seven years and it is of 1,500 million euros a year, thanks, especially, to imports in the textile sector that Spanish companies make, according to data of the ICEX.
Recently, Spain approved the appointment of Hassan Mahmud Khandaker as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to our country. He was director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and he later held the leadership of the Police. He is accused of crimes against the Humanity before the International Criminal Court. The Spanish authorities consider that, unless the accusation is accepted by the Court, they cannot deny the placet to Khandaker.
