The image of Spain in the international press during the first half of 2015 has improved considerably, as a result of the positive values shown in such areas as the economy, Royal Household, political system, foreign policy and security forces, according to a report published by the Elcano Royal Institute.
The report, which was drawn up on the bases of an analysis of 1.223 articles published in the most influential dailies and agencies throughout the world, in English, French and Spanish, is the work of José Pérez Martín and Juan Antonio Sánchez Giménez, who emphasise that “Spain appears in the international press as a country which is of interest to investors”, in that the Spanish economy “has improved substantially in comparison with previous years”.
In addition, they also say that Spain is seen as “standard bearer for economic recovery”, as a result of the positive news on macroeconomic data, on the big Spanish banks and on the investments made by such companies as Inditex, Telefónica and AENA.
In short, Spain appears in the international press as a country of interest to investors, although unemployment continues to be news.
The economic evolution and the activities of the Royal Household, keys in the change, according to Elcano
Particularly significant is the influence of the intensive diplomatic activity by the King and Queen, including their visits to France, Mexico and the Lebanon, which have caused the image of the Royal Household in the English and French speaking press to evolve very positively. In addition, this has led to greater interest in other news on Spain.
In the sphere of internal politics, the image of political corruption and mismanagement of the crisis has been replaced by a great interest in the emergence of Podemos and Ciudadanos on the political scene.
As for foreign policy, the news has been marked by the diplomatic crisis with Venezuela (principally in the Latin American press) and by the pointed exchanges between the Spanish and Greek Governments. On the matter of the Greek economic crisis, the Spanish image in the international press appears linked to Germany and its defence of saving and austerity policies.
Finally, the image of the Spanish security forces has been promoted by the widespread impact of the news of the detentions of activists and terrorists .linked to jihadist groups.
