The presentation of the I European Games, which will take place in Baku in June, was at the centre of the reception offered on Monday by the Azerbaijan embassy in Spain. The ambassador, Altai Efendiev (in the photo, above) pointed out that these Games mark the start of a “new European history”.
Still on a sporting theme, he showed off his diplomatic flair when he underscored the “noteworthy collaboration with Spain, through Real Madrid’s sport academy” in Baku, without forgetting his gratitude for Atlético de Madrid, which he qualified as a “magnificent partner in the promotion of Azerbaijan”.
The head of the Azeri legation also referred to other issues, such as the need to resolve the territorial conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, for which he requested arbitration from the International Community. He also underscored the excellent bilateral relations with Spain, and backed the propulsion of the project for a southern gas corridor, which he considered “the basis of collaboration with the EU”. Finally, he highlighted the start of direct flights between Spain and Azerbaijan, which began last Saturday.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ybáñez attented the soiree, celebrated at the Hotel Intercontinental, Madrid.
Also in attendance, among others, where the ambassadors for Iran, Pakistan, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Oman, Algeria, Tunisia, Palestine, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Romania, Ukraine, Austria, Albania, Andorra and representatives from the US, Sudanese, Russian and Uzbek embassies.
