The Minister of Home Affairs, Jorge Fernández Díaz, inaugurated yesterday the International Protection Office in Melilla, situated in the border area of Beni-Enzar. The representative for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Spain, Francesca Friz-Prgud, accompanied the Minister, who announced that 50 new Guardias Civiles and 38 Municipal Police will be instated in Melilla soon.
This office will identify those immigrants that could be potential applicants for international protection. So far this year, dozens of immigrants have stormed the fence of this Spanish city that borders with Morocco.
