The Diplomat. Madrid
Yesterday, the Deputy Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Joseph García, met, in Brussels, the European commissioners for Transport, Violeta Bulc, and Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, as well as members of the European Parliament, to transmit them the Gibraltarian opposition to the decision made on 3 December by the ministers of Transport to cancel the application of the Single European Sky as regards Gibraltar’s airport. The measure was taken at the request of Spain, which considers that admitting Gibraltar can be interpreted as recognition of the British sovereignty on the isthmus where the airport is located and that has been illegally occupied by the United Kingdom since the 19th century.
