Australia hopes to appoint their new ambassador to Spain at the end of February or start of March, embassy sources have told The Diplomat. After Ambassador Jane Hardy’s retirement, for personal reasons, the Australian legation is in the hands of Charge d’affaires, Rosemary Morris-Castico, who, in turn, is taking over from Penny Williams in this post.
Hardy agreed her stepping down from the post in November, in which she had been expected to stay until December 2015, after her husband, Lithuanian sculptor and painter Vytas Kapociunas, 71, was detained at Canberra Airport after being charged with sexual assault on a minor outside Australian territory, a charge which led him to appear before a Canberra court in October, according to “The Australian” newspaper.
