The Association Agreement between the European Union and Mexico could be affected if the Peña Nieto government is unable to offer conclusive explanations on the causes of the disappearance of 43 students in the state of Guerrero, according to EC sources consulted by The Diplomat.
Brussels recognises the enormous effort that the Mexican executive is doing to reform the country, but they add that that is not enough for many EU members, who are starting to express doubts about the benefits of maintaining the agreement with a country whose democracy they question.
Mexico needs to explain to Brussels, as soon as possible, what happened and adopt efficient measures to avoid similar events happening again According to the sources consulted by The Diplomat “we shall have to wait, most certainly, for a resolution” in which the EU condemns the disappearance of the students and, possibly, advises of the negative consequences that they could have for commercial relations with Mexico.
