The National Distance Learning University (UNED, in Spanish) has awarded the Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet, a Honorary Doctorate, according to sources consulted by The Diplomat, “for her commitment and her trajectory in defence of the recuperation of democracy in Chile, for a work in favour of women’s rights in the world, and for her commitment to equity and better equality in education and social wellbeing”.
The Graduation Ceremony for the Doctorate, however, is not likely to coincide with the official visit to Spain that the Chilean leader will carry out on 29 October, seeing as the institution has already planned to award, with the pertinent ceremony, other doctorates to other personalities.
Bachelet, a doctor by profession already possesses a number of honorary doctorates from universities across the world such as Montreal, Santiago de Chile, the Autonomous of Santo Domingo, the University of San Carlos de Guatemala or the Women’s of Ehwa. In Spain, only two, as well as the UNED, have already awarded this distinction to the Chilean president: Pompeu Fabra and Menéndez Pelayo.
