The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo, who has travelled to New York to give one last, definitive push for Spain’s candidacy to the UN’s Security Council, has found an excellent instrument to fulfil his purpose; the celebration of Spain’s National Day on 12 October. With a one day delay, the celebratory reception will take place today, Monday, at the residence of the Spanish representative before the UN, Román Oyarzún.
The ambassadors of the other 192 countries which sit on the UN’s General Assembly have been invited. On 16 October, the Assembly will be voting for the new, non-permanent, members to the Council for the 2015-2016 biennial. Spain is up against New Zealand and Turkey, for the two open slots, and up to that very day, the Minister and his team will try to confirm the commitments already received and attract those countries still reticent.
The principal argument will be Spain’s trajectory and commitment to the United Nations over many years, but the undecided may be swayed by the wine chosen for the reception: a Matarromera, with a Ribera de Duero designation of origin, of which the ambassadors will receive a bottle as a token.
